Sunday Shopping - November 8, 2011

Hello Friends –

Have you noticed that Sunday seems to have become one of the busiest of shopping days?

Several weeks ago, (Yes, it was on a Sunday and I’m as guilty as anyone else) I was in one of the chain stores. People were rushing around filling their shopping carts. Most of the folks I saw had blank stares on their faces as they were totally focused on finding the next item on their list. It just hit me that this is not what we, as Christians, are commanded to do.

The 4th commandment (as found in Exodus 20) states – “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it Holy”, and I’m afraid that we fall miserably short on that one.
Realizing that certain emergency purchases will still need to be made on the Sabbath, I believe that a statement could be made to our communities, if all who read this post would try to buy whatever their family needs on a weekday.

Now here is a REALLY sensitive thought: Many Christians enjoy eating out after Church. But if you think about it, isn’t our enjoying a meal out causing others to have to work?

I have wrestled with whether or not to publish these thoughts, believing that many may be offended, but I also believe that if Christian Brothers and Sisters were to stand together and refrain from shopping, as much as possible, on our day of rest, that it could have such an impact that stores would no longer find it profitable to be open on the Sabbath.

In closing, I would only ask that you think and pray before deciding when to shop.

Whether you agree or disagree, please feel free to share your thoughts. Maybe you will convince me that I am totally off base here. If enough feedback is received, I will be glad to publish a follow-up communication, sharing some of your comments anonymously.

If you are not currently on my email list and would like to receive occasional communications listing important happenings and a few of my thoughts, just send your name and email address to: - I would be happy to welcome you into the “Gospel Trumpet Family”.

My wish for you, as always, is to Be Blessed!

In His Service... Jack <><

Jessy Dixon Passes - September 27, 2011

Dear Friends,
It is with sadness that I learned of the death Jessy Dixon, longtime fixture on the Gaither Gospel series.
Something that I didn't know, and found interesting about Jessy is that in his younger years, he was the keyboard player for "Earth, Wind, and Fire", a rock-and-roll band popular in the 60's and 70's. Jessy's website also states that he did more concerts in Europe, Africa, India, Scandinavia, and the USA than any other Gospel artist. He also received the coveted award of "Gospel Artist of the Century".
His sister, Miriam Dixon, said that Jessy had been sick but did not offer any details of his death. There were no concerts listed during September on his website itinerary at and prior months were not available.
A homecoming celebration will be held on Monday October 10, 2011 at 6:00 P.M. at the Family Christian Center in Munster, Indiana.
Jessy was 73 and will be greatly missed!
Please join me in praying for the Dixon family.
Blessings to each of you!

Gospel Chicken House Closes - March 12, 2011

The Gospel Chicken House in Montpelier, Virginia has closed. Reported to be the oldest continually running Saturday night Gospel venue in the country, many top notch groups got their start there. The walls were plastered with photos of professional Gospel groups who had performed there. Mr. Pollard, the owner and sparkplug of the operation passed away earlier this year and sadly, the doors have now closed. A dream of one man and his wife gave so many wonderful evenings to anyone who wished to come. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Pollard for your dedication to getting The Word out in song! You and The Gospel Chicken House will be greatly missed! @<><

New Beginnings - March 1, 2011

Howdy Friends,
As many of you know, I have taken a break from performing for nearly a year. However, several things have happened to give me "renewed energy". One of the nicest things was to receive a phone message from a couple in California, who had visited the website and wanted to get a copy of the CD for their pastor who was a former trumpet player. He had recently picked up his horn, and my CD was meant to give him encouragement. WHAT A BLESSING TO BOTH THE PASTOR AND TO ME!
Secondly, I recently retired from my construction job - This will give me more time to practice and will enable me to begin playing concerts again. Hopefully, you can sense the excitement!
I am also hoping to find a Gospel Group to minister with - preferably one where all members are committed to playing only Gospel Music and furthering the Kingdom through their music. The perfect situation would be to find a well-established group who is praying to find someone who can add new life to their presentation. (That would be "The Gospel Trumpet" :-)
Although Guy Penrod doesn't need any spicing up, his group would be a prefect fit. Please pass this on to him if you know him personally!!
In closing, please keep "The Gospel Trumpet" in your prayers and in your mind for any upcoming events and programs where unique presentations of spiritual music are needed.
I'm only an email or phone call away and look forward to playing for you soon.
Sincerely, Jack
@ <><

Recipe for a Great New Year - December 29, 2010

From Connie Hopper of “The Hoppers”.

Take twelve fine, full-grown months, see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor, hate and jealousy; cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past – have them as fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time.

Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. This batch will keep for just one year. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one day at a time as follows:

Into each day put twelve parts of faith, eleven of patience, ten of courage, nine of work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), eight of hope, seven of fidelity, six of liberality, five of kindness, four of rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad – don’t do it), three of prayer, two of meditation, and one well-selected resolution. If you have no conscientious scruples, put in about a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor.

Pour into the whole, love ad-libitum (Latin for “at one’s pleasure”) and mix with vim.

Cook thoroughly in a fervent heat; garnish with a few smiles and a sprig of joy, then serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness, and a Happy New Year will be a certainty.

Independence Day Greetings - July 6, 2010

Howdy Friends – Glad you dropped in!
Hope you had a great (and safe) Independence Day. Donna and I went over to Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton to see Ivan Parker and Brian Free and Assurance. Everything was wonderful except it was soooo hot – even sitting under the huge shade trees… If you are ever near Staunton, Virginia, don’t miss driving around Gypsy Hill Park. Everyone raves about it and there’s almost always something going on.

Each weekday evening during July and August there are FREE concerts.

Monday nights are Stonewall Brigade Band nights, featuring lots of toe-tapping music.
Praise-in-the-Park, offering many different styles of gospel music is held on Tuesdays.
Wednesday evenings feature some of the country’s best Bluegrass.
Jazz-in-the-Park is held on Thursdays.
And each Friday an award-winning family movie is shown on the giant screen.

You just haven’t lived until you’ve been there! :-)
Until Later… Have a Great and Blessed Week

Prayers Needed - July 2, 2010

Just received news about The Bowling Family's tragic tour-bus accident. 12-13 people were injured when the bus slammed into a tractor trailer truck which was stopped in traffic near Charlotte, NC. Several of the Bowlings were injured, with Mark's injuries being the most serious. The Bowlings are Gospel Music Artists with many excellent songs to their credit. Please join with me in praying for quick recoveries for all and that they will exit this tradgedy with an even stronger desire to sing for Jesus!

Dinner With A Perfect Stranger - January 20, 2010

Have you seen this movie? Donna and I watched it last weekend and found it to be Life Changing! It took religion out of the picture and placed our focus on Jesus. (Isn't that where it's supposed to be?) Don't miss the opportunity to see it - It's available on DVD for home use and gets 5 stars from us. To make things even sweeter, Family Christian Bookstores have the 2-movie set on special right now for only $5

Haiti Disaster - January 15, 2010

Please continue to pray for the nation of Haiti. Not only that their country will be able to heal from this great earthquake tradgedy, but for something far more important: Through this great trial, Hatians will turn their hearts toward a living Savior and become followers of Jesus!

Jimmy Fortune Concert - Weyer's Cave Community Center - November 24, 2009

Concert Date: December 19, 2009
This concert is a benefit for the Verona Food Pantry - not to be confused with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
Jimmy will be singing and The Pony Express Band consisting of Robby and Lisa Meadows, Pat Burr, and Willie Hayes will back him up. Always a great event and for a very good cause!

Prayers For Direction - November 5, 2009

Hello Friends –
I have been praying recently about God’s direction for The Gospel Trumpet music ministry and some specific venues have come to mind. They are as follows:

The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
Carnegie Hall Theater in Lewisburg, West Virginia.
The Robert F. Thomas Chapel at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN.
Liberty Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Nationwide Gaither Homecoming Tours.
The Virginia Beach Gospelfest in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Everyone knows that Gospel Music is not the “in” thing at some of these venues; however, believers also know that nothing is too great for our God! Would you please join me in praying that even if the Gospel Trumpet is not the one selected to play in these locations, that music and testimony which lifts the name of Jesus would become a mighty part of their programming?
I feel that we are in the last days and are right on the verge of the Lord exercising his mighty power. How can He possibly wait much longer?? As Christians, we need to be telling those we come in contact with about His love and wonderful, saving grace!

Would the message of The Gospel Trumpet would fit in with a special event at your church? If so, please give me a call. Unlike many traveling ministries I do not charge. Love offerings are appreciated to help cover expenses but there is never a fee. The Lord has always provided.
References will be cheerfully furnished upon request.
Blessings to you and Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Jay Caldwell and The Gospel Ambassadors - October 5, 2009

Last night I played with High on the Mountain Boys at the Crawford Brothers 56th Anniversary Celebration in Staunton, VA. We had the honor of sharing the evening with Jay Caldwell and the Gospel Ambassadors from Wilmington, Delaware. The Ambassadors are on the road every weekend spreading the name of Jesus, and are one of the nicest and most talented groups I have ever encountered. Do you remember a group from the 70's called the Chi-Lites? The Gospel ambassadors' sound was so reminiscent of the Chi-Lites to me - with a major exception... The Ambassadors sing about our Lord, Jesus! They have a website, Jay Caldwell and the Gospel Ambassadors, and a few videos on YouTube, but you must see them in person to experience the real magic of the group. Leader Jay Caldwell's testimony is woven throughout the program, and his musicians were incredible. You guys keep up the good work and hopefully we will be together again soon. God's richest blessings to you!

Southern Grace to Play - October 1, 2009

Howdy -
The Southern Grace Band from Grottoes will perform a benefit concert of Gospel music for WNLR 1150am, the local Christian radio station on Sunday, October 4th. Larry Kiger (who plays lead and steel guitar with the group) and I have been friends for many years. Please contact Nina Gross, the WNLR station manager for all the exciting details at (540) 885-1150.
Unfortunately, the Gospel Trumpet had a prior committment or I would be sharing there as well! This is a great cause...

Jack's Favorite Restaurant - September 28, 2009

I have a new favorite resturant - It's the Mill Creek Cafe in Goshen, Virginia. If you love good food at reasonable prices, generous portions, great service, a quaint atmosphere, complete with wireless internet and live Gospel music on Sunday afternoons, this is the spot for you! I don't endorse many places, but this is one that I am happy to recommend to you. The address is 1152 Virginia Avenue, Goshen Virginia and their phone number is (540) 319-4007. Next time you are out for a Sunday drive, why not head for The Mill Creek Cafe. The drive is beautiful from anywhere and the music starts at 3:00pm. <>< --------------------------------------
